How to choose the best toothpaste for optimal oral hygiene
Toothpaste plays a vital role in maintaining oral hygiene. However, with the number of options available in the market, it can be confusing to choose the right toothpaste. NewsBytes got in touch with Viren Khuller, Director of STIM Oral Care to guide us through the different types of toothpaste and help you select the best one to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride toothpaste strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. When applied, fluoride forms a protective layer on tooth enamel, making it resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugars. "Fluoride toothpaste helps prevent cavities and is suitable for all individuals unless your dentist specifically advises otherwise. Make sure your toothpaste contains an approved dose of fluoride," says Khuller.
Whitening toothpaste
"Whitening toothpaste aims to brighten your smile by removing surface stains on your teeth. However, it is important to note that these toothpastes will only help remove extrinsic stains i.e., stains located on the outer surface of your enamel," suggests Khuller. Whitening toothpaste often contains mild abrasives and chemical agents that assist in gently polishing and removing stains from the enamel.
Desensitizing toothpaste
If you experience tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, or sour foods and beverages, desensitizing toothpaste can give you relief. According to Khuller, regular use of desensitizing toothpaste can reduce sensitivity and make your eating and drinking experience more comfortable. "Sensitivity could be due to an underlying disease; you should visit a dentist to get it checked," he suggests.
Re-mineralizing toothpaste
A remineralizing toothpaste is a type of toothpaste that is designed to promote the remineralization of teeth. "Remineralization is the process of replenishing essential minerals, such as calcium and phosphate, that are lost from tooth enamel due to acid attacks from bacteria and acidic foods and drinks," explains Khuller. This process helps to strengthen and repair tooth enamel, preventing tooth decay and sensitivity.
Children's toothpaste
Children need extra care, and selecting the appropriate toothpaste is crucial for their oral well-being. Specifically formulated for their tender age, children's toothpaste is often available in exciting flavors. It contains lower levels of fluoride to ensure safety. According to Khuller, supervising children during tooth brushing is crucial to ensure they use the right amount of toothpaste and prevent accidental swallowing.
