Expert tips: How to care for newborn kittens at home
Cat parents would agree that when it comes to newborn kittens, a lot is to be taken care of for their well-being and proper development. On that note, NewsBytes got in touch with Dr. Shantanu Kalambi, chief veterinary officer at Supertails, who has shared five essential steps and guidelines on how you can nicely take care of these little furballs.
Environment, hygiene, and grooming
"Create a cozy and warm nest for newborn kittens, away from drafts and disturbances. Use a clean and soft blanket or towel as bedding," shares Dr. Kalambi. He further tells that the nest should be cleaned at regular intervals to ensure hygiene. "However, avoid excessive handling of the kittens, especially during the first few weeks, to prevent unnecessary stress," he adds.
Nutrition, feeding, and feeding schedule
Just like babies of any other mammal, newborn kittens require proper nutrition for growth and development. "If the mother cat is present and able to nurse, allow the kittens to nurse naturally. If the mother is unavailable or unable to nurse, consult a veterinarian for guidance on appropriate milk replacers and feeding techniques," shares the doctor.
Elimination and weight management
"Kittens cannot eliminate waste on their own. After each feeding, gently stimulate their genital area with a warm, damp cloth or cotton ball to encourage urination and defecation," suggests Dr. Kalambi. The veterinarian also cautions that sudden weight gain or weight loss can indicate a health issue. "Regularly weigh the kittens to ensure they are gaining weight steadily," he advises.
Socializing and bonding
Socializing, bonding, and creating a safe environment for kittens is very important and should be done the proper way. Wondering how? "Interact with the kittens gently and calmly to promote positive socialization. Gradually introduce them to different sounds, sights, and human touch to help them become well-adjusted and friendly cats," enlightens Dr. Kalambi.
Veterinary care
Caring for newborn kittens demands patience, attention, and dedication. "Schedule regular check-ups with a veterinarian to monitor the kittens' health, receive necessary vaccinations, and address any concerns or potential health issues," recommends Dr. Kalambi. He also suggests cat parents get in touch with an experienced breeder for guidance, in case they aren't able to reach out to a veterinarian.
