Expert shares Ayurveda-based dietary tips to manage PCOS
Many women from around the world are afflicted by the complex hormonal condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The traditional Indian medical system of Ayurveda provides important insights into controlling PCOS with individualized food and lifestyle choices. Dr. Vivek Srivastav from Zeon Lifesciences shares some Ayurveda-based dietary tips that can help women with PCOS foster their healing.
'Agni' balancing for proper digestion
Ayurveda places a huge emphasis on keeping a healthy digestive fire or agni. "A common piece of advice for people with PCOS is to eat smaller, well-prepared meals throughout the day rather than stuffing themselves," says Srivastav. He adds by saying that spices that aid in digestion, such as fennel, cumin, ginger, and turmeric, are anti-inflammatory and can boost agni to encourage effective digestion.
Nutritious foods for maintaining hormonal balance
The importance of consuming healthy foods that assist hormonal balance is emphasized in an Ayurvedic diet for PCOS. "The basis of your diet should be whole, unprocessed foods. Lean proteins like lentils and beans, a variety of colorful vegetables, whole grains like quinoa, millet, and brown rice, and healthy fats like ghee and coconut oil can help manage PCOS symptoms," enlightens the doctor.
Cutting back on refined carbohydrates and sugar
A typical problem in PCOS cases is insulin resistance, which can result in weight gain and hormone abnormalities. "Ayurveda suggests limiting the use of processed foods, refined carbs, and sugary foods," shares Srivastav. "To help regulate blood sugar levels and enhance insulin sensitivity, choose complex carbs with a lower glycemic index, such as whole grains and legumes," he enlightens.
Herbal teas to the rescue
When paired with an Ayurvedic diet, certain herbal teas can help manage PCOS symptoms. "Cinnamon tea is thought to improve insulin sensitivity and control blood sugar levels. For people with PCOS-related insulin resistance, this is very advantageous," states Srivastav. He further mentions that spearmint tea is another herbal remedy that could aid in reducing excessive androgen levels, which often rise in PCOS cases.
Follow an individualized approach
"An Ayurveda-based diet for PCOS must take into account each person's constitution (dosha) and particular imbalances," reveals Srivastav. Hence, it is important to find out what works for your body and what doesn't. "Aim to get individualized advice that addresses your unique requirements and concerns," he suggests. "But ensure that Ayurvedic therapies should also support traditional medical practices rather than replacing them," he concludes.
