    What's the story

Rice is one of the most popular foods in the world and is used in almost all cuisines.

Known as an important source of carbohydrates and vitamins, there are about 120,000 varieties of rice globally that offer a distinct taste, texture, and aroma.

Today, let us talk about the five most commonly used rice, their prices, and the dishes you can cook using them.

    Rice 1

    Arborio rice

Arborio is Italy's contribution to the world of rice and is known for its creamy texture.

With a good water-absorbing capacity, its flavor is slightly on the sweeter side and offers a crunchy appeal when cooked.

It is mostly used to cook risotto and rice puddings. Prices of this variety of rice start from Rs. 500 per kg in India.

    Rice 2

    Basmati rice

Basmati is from India and is one of the most commonly used varieties of rice.

It's aromatic, offers a nutty flavor, and is available in both white and brown variants.

On the health front, it's low in calories and fat content, making it a great alternative to white rice.

Priced at Rs. 200 per kg onward, you can cook any rice-based dish with it.

    Rice 3

    Black rice

Featuring an earthy and nutty flavor, black rice garners attention for its low glycemic index which makes it suitable for diabetics to consume.

It originated in Asia about 10,000 years ago and is used in a lot of Thai snacks as well as desserts like puddings and custards.

One kilogram of black rice is sold in India for anything between Rs. 50-150.

    Rice 4

    Koshihikari rice

Koshihikari rice, which is also called short-grain rice, hails from Japan and came into existence back in 1956. It is the most-grown rice in the country and is quite popular around the world too.

A sticky and chewy offering, you can make some appetizing Japanese dishes like sushi and onigiri with it.

In India, it is available at Rs. 350 onward.

    Rice 5

    Rice paper

Rice paper is a staple food in Vietnam. It is used to make a whole lot of appetizers like spring rolls by wrapping various ingredients and stuffings in it.

Made with steamed rice batter which is first dried in the Sun, it's incredibly soft, high in protein, and very low in calories.

You can buy a packet of rice paper from Rs. 100 onward.
