Points to keep in mind before shopping from sustainable brands
Sustainability is the buzzword in fashion today. It is an important consideration to reduce the environmental and social impact of your clothing choices. While purchasing from a "sustainable brand," there are several key factors to note to ensure that your choice aligns with your values and contributes positively to the environment. Kapil Bhatia, CEO and founder, of UNIREC, helps us with key pointers.
Research the brand's sustainability practices
Look for brands that transparently communicate their sustainability efforts, says Bhatia. "Check their website and marketing materials for information on eco-friendly practices, such as ethical manufacturing, ethical labor practices, and reduced carbon footprint," he shares. Additionally, understand the brand's supply chain, from sourcing materials to production and distribution. Brands that are committed to sustainability often prioritize local sourcing and reduced transportation emissions.
Assess the quality
Sustainable fashion should not compromise on quality. Sustainable products are usually designed for durability and longevity. Inspect the craftsmanship and stitching of the garment. This guarantees its durability. You can also consider customer reviews for the brand. "High-quality clothing typically lasts longer, reducing the need for frequent replacements. This is essential for sustainability as it minimizes textile waste," explains Bhatia.
Fabric choices
Bhatia recommends paying attention to the materials used in the clothing. Sustainable brands prioritize organic, recycled, or renewable materials that have a lower environmental impact. He recommends opting for fabrics that are environment-friendly, such as organic cotton, hemp, Tencel, or recycled materials. These materials are typically manufactured with lower pesticide usage, decreased water consumption, and minimized chemical processing.
Choose versatile pieces
Apart from the brands, you can do your bit for a sustainable future. "To maximize the sustainability of your wardrobe, focus on versatile and timeless clothing items that can be worn in various settings and seasons," says the expert. According to him, classic styles tend to stay in fashion longer, reducing the need for frequent updates to your wardrobe.
Check for certification
Most sustainable brands have a certification that ensures their authenticity and commitment to sustainability. Go for brands that are transparent about their sustainability practices. "Look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), Fair Trade, or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 when purchasing sustainable clothing," says the UNIREC founder. These certifications indicate that the brand or product meets specific environmental and ethical standards.
