Keep these snacks handy while traveling to high altitudes
Traveling to high altitudes is no easy feat and requires a sufficient amount of training and preparation. While it could be thrilling, you need to also keep in mind your well-being when going up as your body undergoes many transformations during the process. So to ensure you are all fit while doing so, carry these five delicious and easily-available food items with you.
Chocolates or bananas for energy
Walking or light exercises at high elevations can drain your energy. Your body may need a dose of carbohydrates as an energy source to fuel up, which is when food items such as chocolates (protein bars) or bananas can give you an instant boost. Both these offerings can also offer respite from altitude sickness as they are loaded with various antioxidants and minerals.
Nuts and dry fruits
Nuts and dry fruits are some of the most handy things to carry when traveling to high altitudes. Energy bars or chikkis that are filled with nuts can take care of your protein, fiber, and carbs intake during your journey, ensuring that your body doesn't run out of its battery. You can carry a few packets of raisins, dates, prunes, figs, and apricots.
Fresh fruits
Fruits are packed with several kinds of fibers, vitamins, and minerals which are good for your overall health. Some potassium-rich fruits including bananas, avocados, and tomatoes are great to keep your energy levels high during your travel and keep altitude sickness aside. You can also savor some watery fruits like watermelons, kiwis, oranges, and musk melons to steer clear of dehydration.
Sports drink
It is normal to feel dehydrated when conquering massive heights as a lot of body fluid gets lost through sweating. Some studies have suggested that drinking a liquid that contains both carbs and electrolytes, such as a sports drink, will help you stay more hydrated at high altitudes. So besides stalking up on water and coconut water, take along some sports drinks as well.
Mixed Seeds
Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and flaxseeds contain high concentrations of important fatty acids, vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron. These healthy snacks can keep you sufficiently full for a long time and give a boost to your energy levels so that you don't get tired or starved during your travel.
