Mastering the art of men's smart-casual dressing
The smart-casual dress code occupies a unique and versatile space within men's fashion, offering an eclectic blend of casual and formal elements for a relaxed yet refined appearance. Smart-casuals empower you to strike that perfect balance, exuding confidence, style, and a keen sense of appropriateness for any occasion. Designer Pratham Bhalla of BLACQ shares tips to crack smart-casual dressing.
Invest in well-fitted outfits
Invest in well-fitted smart jackets and blazers, Bhalla says. "Go for colors and prints for your jackets and coats. Pair it with chinos or trousers and a white round or v-neck t-shirt. The catch is a well-fitted smart coat," he adds. For winters, Bhalla suggests going for smart, colored sweaters and jackets and pairing them with chinos or jeans.
Get a smart pair of footwear
"Invest in a smart pair of shoes and loafers. Here again, play with colours, don't stick to just black," suggests the expert. Minimalist sneakers or derby shoes are among the best options for smart casual footwear. Go for a pair made from leather, with a clean design. These will look good when paired with denim jeans or tailored pants.
Grooming is key
"Grooming is as important as dressing. Your look should be smart and stylish not casual," says Bhalla. Your haircut should not be shabby and your nails should be well-kempt. Additionally, invest time in dental care. Your smile will be the first thing that people notice. A good mouthwash or dental floss in addition to brushing your teeth would be preferred.
Accessorize well
Men can accessorize their outfits in many ways. However, "don't overdo it," says Bhalla. "Invest in smartwatches to complete the look and don't forget to wear a fragrance," he says. If you are wearing sunglasses, make sure that the color of the lenses and the shape of the frame matches your attire. Refrain from wearing bright and fancy frames.
Dress for the occasion
Style is dressing correctly for your environment as well as expressing yourself. Consider your wardrobe as a set of codes that you must follow, whether you are attending a formal dinner or spending a quiet Sunday at the pub. You will feel comfortable when you dress correctly. It is also a mark of respect for the others present in the room.
