When in France, beware of these scams
France is one of the most visited travel destinations not only in Europe, but the whole world. However, like any popular tourist destination, it's important to remain vigilant against tourist scams that could mar your experience. In this guide, we'll delve into the common scams encountered in France and provide valuable insights on how to steer clear of falling prey to them.
The golden ring scam
A person may come near you, suddenly bending down to pick something up. They claim to have found a missing ring and ask if it's yours. If you say no, they will convince you that they cannot keep it with them. If you agree to take it with you, then they would ask for a little compensation. You need to politely decline such scammers.
Clipboard scams
A person might approach you with a clipboard that includes some fake petitions and signatures from people around the world. They will ask you to sign to show support. But as you sign, their companions will go through your pockets and steal your valuables. Make sure to always keep your valuables in harder-to-reach places or keep your hands in these pockets to avoid pickpockets.
Friendship bracelet scam
Some smiling and seemingly nice fellows can walk towards you, stretching out their hands, almost like they are about to congratulate you for something. Once they have got hold of your hand, they would start braiding a little friendship bracelet, around your wrist. They would then ask for compensation for their efforts. Don't engage with strangers and walk away from such people.
Overcharging at the restaurants
These frauds primarily take place near tourist landmarks. This scam can happen in different ways such as providing you with a menu without pricing and then charging you a hefty sum, providing you with a special "tourist menu" with astronomically high prices, or covertly adding items you didn't order to your bill. Research the restaurant/cafe before going in. Avoid those near the tourist areas.
ATM scams
While you're at an ATM, someone can come up to you asking for help. They may inform you that the ATM is faulty and ask you to input your PIN. They will observe you input your PIN, seize your ATM card, and use it to withdraw cash from another machine. Always keep hold of your ATM card/wallet. Don't leave cards at the machine unattended.
