Traditionally, a sauna was a heated pit or cave where people would go to stay warm in the winter. However, since then, the traditional Finnish sauna has undergone several changes. A modern Finnish sauna is a warm, wood-lined chamber or building that has been heated to a temperature of about 80°C. Finns go there to unwind, either individually or with friends and family.

A wooden structure with a stove inside (kiuas), and a mound of stones (kiuaskivet) are the main elements in the modern version of the Finnish sauna. Long-lasting birch is used in the wood-burning stove to heat the space. By generating steam (löyly), pouring water over the kiuaskivet raised the sauna's humidity level. According to Finnish culture the better the steam, the better the sauna.

Before entering the sauna, take a shower. Go to the sauna in your swimwear, towel or naked and select a seat. Water can be poured or ladled upon the hot stones as desired. You can spend as much time as you like in the sauna. Remain hydrated. To cool off, go for a refreshing swim or shower. And repeat the process.
