Salman Rushdie to write about attack that left him blind
Salman Rushdie recently made his first public appearance after he was attacked in August 2022. He was stabbed in the neck and torso which left his one eye and a few fingertips dysfunctional. The author was treated in the hospital for about six long weeks. Now if reports are to be believed, the celebrated novelist is to soon write a book about the same.
'Nice to be back,' jokes Rushdie
Rushdie attended the PEN America Literary Gala in New York on the night of June 1, Thursday. This was his first appearance since the attack, joking about which he was quoted saying, "Nice to be back - as opposed to not being back, which was also an option." He was greeted with a standing ovation when he received the PEN Centenary Courage Award.
People who saved my life are the 'real heroes': Rushdie
Per reports, during his acceptance speech at the event, Rushdie said, "The true courage was not shown by me." Rather, the people who rushed to save his life "were the heroes." "If it had not been for these people, I most certainly would not be standing here today. The courage, that day, was all theirs," he further added.
'I'm trying to write a book about the attack'
In a pre-recorded Zoom appearance, the famous author revealed that he is planning to write a book about the attack on him. "I'm trying to write a book about the attack on me - what happened and what it means, not just about the attack, but around it," he shared. "It will be a relatively short book, a couple of hundred pages," he verified.
The author shares his thoughts on it
"It's not the easiest book in the world to write but it's something I need to get past to do anything else. I can't start writing a novel that's got nothing to do with this, so I just have to deal with it," he said.
