Rarest of the rare wildlife species found in India
India's biodiversity is incredibly diverse and abundant. Beyond the animals we are familiar with, there exists a fascinating world of rare and elusive species that you likely haven't come across before. From the sea cows to the lion-tailed macaque, India is home to some truly unique and awe-inspiring creatures. These unique animals bring an added sense of wonder to India's natural marvels.
Lion-tailed macaque
In the lush forests of the Western Ghats in South India, you can discover an amazing animal called the lion-tailed macaque. It is named after its tail, which looks like a lion's mane. This special primate lives in the rainforests Sirsi-Honnavara in Karnataka, the Silent Valley National Park in Kerala, and the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu.
Dugong
Dugongs, often referred to as "sea cows," peacefully graze on seagrasses in the coastal waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. At one time, these large, plant-eating mammals thrived in Indian sea waters. However, their population has dramatically decreased to around 200 individuals, and unfortunately, it is believed to be continuously declining both in numbers and distribution.
Purple frog
Purple frogs can be found in the beautiful Western Ghats in southern India. But they are not easy to spot because they spend most of their lives underground, and they only come out for a brief period to find a mate. These amphibians don't even need to come up for food because they survive on the underground termites.
Indian spotted chevrotain
The Indian spotted chevrotain, also known as mouse deer is the smallest deer species. This tiny creature is highly active at night, making it challenging to spot in the wild. It is quite shy and prefers to stay cryptic. The spots on its body provide excellent camouflage. Unlike other deer species, it doesn't have antlers and prefers a solitary lifestyle.
Malabar giant squirrel
The Malabar giant squirrel, also known as shekru, is a rodent species that is native to India and is known for its vibrant colors, including black, cream, and purple. These squirrels can be found in the Satpura hill range, which spans across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. They prefer to live in deciduous and evergreen forests, which are widespread throughout peninsular India.
