Pokhara is officially Nepal's new tourism capital
What's the story
In a picturesque ceremony at Barahi Ghat, overlooking the beautiful Phewa Lake, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamla Dahal declared Pokhara the "tourism capital of Nepal."
The Prime Minister also voiced plans to persuade China to initiate commercial flights to and from Pokhara International Airport, which he hopes will be viewed as a "grant project" by China.
The announcement came amidst efforts to secure Chinese aid for an industrial park in eastern Nepal.
Airport
Pokhara International Airport and prospective Chinese assistance
Although operational since January 2022, the China-built Pokhara International Airport has remained idle due to disputes between Nepal and China regarding its status in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The Prime Minister's declaration aligns with Nepal's endeavors to obtain Chinese support for a major industrial park project.
This initiative, along with a 327-MegaWatt hydroenergy venture, is anticipated to be finalized at Kathmandu's Investment summit in late April.
