With just a few weeks left for Holi, what about planning a nice weekend trip to celebrate the festival of colors in the most special and memorable manner? There are several beautiful destinations across India where the festival is celebrated with pomp and gaiety. Different places have different rituals and styles to celebrate the festival. Let's check out some of these places.
Mathura
Mathura is well-known for Holi celebrations as it's the birthplace of Lord Krishna who was closely associated with the festival. When here, do visit the famous Dwarkadheesh Temple where several devotees gather on the morning of Holi to play gulal, sing, dance, and chant amid spectacular celebrations. You can also witness colorful processions starting from Vishram Ghat at noon and ending near Holi Gate.
Vrindavan
Vrindavan is one of the best places to experience the true flavors of the festival. When here, you must visit the Banke Bihari Temple to enjoy your Holi bash. The celebrations here continue for a week where people start with Phoolon ki Holi, then widows' Holi, and end with a splash of colors. Also, visit the Gopinath Temple to witness widows playing with colors.
Santiniketan
Located near Bolpur in West Bengal, Santiniketan is another famous place to celebrate Holi. The place celebrates Holi in the form of Basanta Utsav or Spring Festival which was started by Rabindranath Tagore. The students of Viswa Bharati University organize a cultural program where everyone is clad in yellow clothes, smeared in Holi colors, and perform traditional dances and sing Bengali songs.
Udaipur
If you are looking forward to playing a royal Holi, then Udaipur in Rajasthan is the place for you. The celebrations here start with Holika Dahan with the royal family actively taking part in it. The local Maharaja lights a ceremonial bonfire in the royal courtyard and locals perform folk dances around the bonfire. A royal procession is also organized to mark the celebrations.
Hampi
If you are thinking that Holi is confined to northern India, then you must visit Hampi in Karnataka to see the southern way of celebrations. Locals and travelers involve in a color fight along with beating drums, singing, and dancing along the streets of the historic city. After the play, people dive into the Tungabhadra River to wash away the colors.
