Guide for asthma patients to survive this monsoon
During monsoon, people with asthma face an increased risk due to various harmful bacteria and viruses floating in the air. Rainfall promotes the growth of plants, resulting in a higher amount of pollen in the air, which is a major trigger for asthma attacks. If asthma patients do not treat their cold or flu infections, it can further amplify the dangers they face.
Warm foods and drinks
To stay warm and reduce the effects of cold weather, it's a good idea to have warm food and drinks. For drinks, you can try ginger tea, masala tea, and turmeric milk. When it comes to food, eat dishes like khichdi, dal, palak or methi saag, and onion-based curries. Roasted sweet potatoes, idli, dosa, and eggs can be beneficial for asthma relief during monsoon.
Inhale steam
Inhaling the steam of boiled water infused with cumin seeds, tulsi, or essential oils can help open up the airways and make breathing easier. First, boil clean water, and add cumin seeds, tulsi leaves, and eucalyptus oil. Let it simmer for a few minutes. Position yourself safely, inhale the steam, and exhale slowly. Repeat for five-10 minutes or until your breathing improves.
Clean AC's air filter
Make sure the air from your air conditioner is clean during the rainy season. Over time, dust, dirt, and other particles accumulate in the filters, reducing the efficiency of the AC unit and potentially circulating pollutants in the air. By cleaning or replacing the filters, you can maintain better indoor air quality and minimize the risk of respiratory issues.
Clean your surroundings
Change your bed sheets regularly to avoid dust and moisture buildup. Wash pillows and covers every week in hot water to get rid of dust mites and germs. If possible, remove carpets as they can collect mold and dampness. If you can't remove them, vacuum them at least twice a week. Wear a mask while cleaning to protect yourself from dust and allergens.
Avoid pets
If you have asthma or allergies, it is best to avoid homes with pets. But if you already have a cat or dog, restrict their movement to one area of the house. Even after vacuuming, their hair and skin particles (dander) can still be around and cause problems with your breathing. Animal dander is a common trigger for asthma and allergies.
