How to ensure your dog stays safe during monsoon
Monsoon woes aren't just limited to us humans but are also quite risky for our pets. It's the very season of downpours when the risk of suffering from ticks/fleas, water-borne diseases, fungal infections, and digestive issues increases in these furballs. However, fret not, for you can take note of these monsoon care tips to keep your doggo 'pawesome' during this time.
Keep your dog away from tick-infested areas
Getting infected with ticks or fleas is among the most common monsoon problems for dogs as one in every three is down with this condition. This occurs during humid weather and when the temperatures reach above 35 degrees Celsius. So to avoid that, indulge your pet in regular anti-tick baths. For this, you can also use natural tick repellents like neem water.
Keep them away from drinking dirty water
Drinking dirty rainwater can cause mild to severe stomach or intestinal infections in dogs. It can also happen if they lick dirty surfaces or their paws during these times. Hence, it is best to ensure your furry friend is drinking clean water and the surfaces around them are tidy. Keep a check that they don't eat grass as they can have small hidden bugs.
Use protective rain gear to walk them around
Dogs need to be taken out on walks, even when it's raining. So while you are all safe under an umbrella, get them protective rain gear to keep them dry. There are many waterproof raincoats, jackets, shoes, etc. that you can buy for your four-pawed pals to safeguard them from cold, cough, and fever. Ensure that you first make them comfortable with the gear.
Offer them a healthy, nutrient-dense diet
When there is a change in the season, the immunity of both humans and animals goes for a toss. So to prevent them from falling sick, make sure you offer your pets a diet rich in fiber, calcium, proteins, carbohydrates, and vitamins that can keep them energized and healthy. Homecooked food is the best in this case over packaged meats available in the market.
Deworm them or get them vaccinated before the monsoon
The likelihood of dogs experiencing respiratory diseases and worm-related ailments becomes stronger during the rainy season, which is why you should check their deworm calendar and get it done before monsoon hits. This is because worms breed in dirty water and they can easily enter your dog's tummy, causing stomach infections, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain.
