Indian citizens can travel visa-free to Malaysia from December 2023
Calling all travel freaks! Here's some good piece of news coming straight from Malaysia! The country has officially waived visa requirements for Indian and Chinese citizens with effect from December 1, 2023, which means you can now travel to this gorgeous destination without having to comply with visa formalities. This move is going to allow travelers to stay visa-free for up to 30 days.
The step is likely to boost Malaysia's travel and tourism
After Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the same on November 26, Malaysia became the fourth country, following Vietnam, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, to have recently waived visa requirements for Indian citizens. This step is likely to boost the country's travel and tourism while also giving a gentle nudge to its economic growth as it expects a massive footfall of travelers from both countries.
Why only citizens from India and China?
PM Ibrahim in his speech stated that this move is to encourage travelers and investors "especially from India and China." Well, this is because as per the data released by the Malaysian government, the country witnessed a whopping 9.16 million tourists between January and June in 2023, with 498,540 from China and 283,885 from India! These nations are key players in Malaysia's prominent markets.
Validity of this exemption hasn't been disclosed yet
Unlike the other countries, Malaysia has not specified the duration of this exemption, i.e., how long it will remain applicable. As of now, it is understood that Indian and Chinese travelers can visit the country visa-free at any time starting from December 1 of this year. However, the Malaysian Prime Minister has noted that this policy would be "subject to security screening."
China to also follow Malaysia's footsteps
Recently, China has also taken an initiative to enhance tourism by permitting visa-free entry for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. Unlike Malaysia, China specified that this exemption extends until November 30, 2024. Travelers from these six nations, engaging in leisure, family visits, or business, can enjoy a 15-day visa-free stay in China as part of this policy.
