Dietary tips to protect your lungs from air pollution

What's the story

The winter season brings excitement and yes, the remaining (and the most awaited!) festivals of the year.

However, it's also the season when most of us fall sick owing to the hazardous air quality index (AQI) levels that keep getting worse by the day.

Fret not, here are some diet tips that can help you keep your lungs safe and healthy from air pollution.

Antioxidants

Stock up on antioxidants

Antioxidants help you breathe better, which is why it is a good idea to load up on them during this season.

They reduce the oxidative stress in your lungs caused by air pollution.

Eat turmeric, spinach, beetroot, berries, apples, tomatoes, green vegetables, oranges, and nuts as they are an excellent source of nutrition. You can also sip on green tea for the same.

No dairy

Reduce the consumption of dairy items

It's best to avoid dairy products when all you breathe is toxic air as it can worsen breathing in many people.

A study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology revealed that ingestion of milk and other dairy items can increase the production of mucus and make asthma worse in those suffering.

Therefore, it is recommended to limit or skip dairy products.

Anti-inflammatory properties

Eat foods with more omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, supported by numerous studies, are known for their potent anti-inflammatory properties, making them a valuable asset for preserving lung health.

They also boost immunity by activating the white blood cells in your body.

Consume walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, spinach, soybeans, and sprouts daily before the thick blanket of pollution starts to mess up your respiratory tract.

Hydration

Proper hydration is the key

Maintaining proper hydration is key to mitigating the effects of air pollution. Adequate water intake helps clear excess mucus from your airways, keeping respiratory discomfort at bay.

Try to drink at least eight glasses of water every day.

You can also drink herbal teas, coconut water, green tea, or warm water with lemon or honey as some delicious and healthy alternatives.
