Kaji nemu declared the state fruit of Assam
The Assam government officially designated the GI-tagged kaji nemu (Citrus Limon) as the state fruit. This elongated and oblong citrus fruit stands out among lemon varieties, renowned for its distinct aroma and numerous health benefits. Indigenous produce
In a recent address to the Assembly, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora revealed the Assam government's decision to declare the GI-tagged kaji nemu as the state fruit. Emphasizing the state's commitment to promoting indigenous produce, Bora highlighted that commercial plantation of this unique lemon variety has already commenced, with exports extending to countries in the Middle East.
Visionary move
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the move as a visionary, foreseeing positive outcomes for the state's farmers and agriculture. Government spokesperson Pijush Hazarika emphasized that the declaration would not only showcase Assam's pride worldwide but also substantially increase farmers' income. Pramod Boro, chief of the autonomous Bodoland Territorial Council, underscored kaji nemu's nutritional value and its significant contribution to local cuisine and health.
Promotional initiative
The fruit, renowned for its unique aroma and rich anti-oxidant properties, was granted a GI tag in 2019, thrives in districts like Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Cachar, Chirang, Nalbari and Dima Hasao. To further promote kaji nemu, the Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing launched a trade promotional program in key cities like Delhi NCR, Pune, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, leveraging the expertise of forty marketing professionals.
Queen of citrus fruits
Kaji nemu weighs 60 to 100 grams and is about six-11.5 cm tall, with shapes ranging from elongated to oblong or elliptical to obovate. Notable lemon varieties in Assam include nemu tenga, small and sweet, and kaji lemons, larger and juicier. Celebrated as the "queen of citrus fruits" in Assam, kaji nemu offers digestive benefits and its oil is used in aromatherapy.
