Tween skincare frenzy: Is the hype justified
In recent times, social media has played a significant role in shaping beauty trends, with influencers and beauty enthusiasts contributing to the normalization of extensive skincare routines. Teenagers labeled "Sephora kids" by adults, are immersing themselves in the world of skincare, sparking concerns among parents and experts alike. Let us know the pitfalls of this overindulgence and if it is justified.
Potential problems
Critics argue that introducing tweens to an intricate skincare regimen may do more harm than good. Expensive formulations often targeted at adults may not offer substantial benefits to young and resilient skin. Additionally, the active ingredients found in many adult skincare products, such as retinol and exfoliating acids, could pose a threat to the developing skin barrier of prepubescent children.
Dermatologists' perspectives
Dermatology experts are noting a surge in consultations from parents seeking advice on their tween's skincare routines. Dr Vinitha Varghese Panicker, dermatologist at Amrita hospital, Kochi says, "To foster informed decision-making in skincare, avoid unneccesary products and tailor your routine based on your skin's unique characterirstics." She adds, "Opt for market-based facemasks tailored to your skin concerns instead of experimenting with kitchen ingredients."
Guidelines for trouble free skin
The skin of tweens, particularly those who have not yet undergone puberty, requires a simpler and gentler approach. Dr Varghese says, "Wearing sunscreen is crucial year-round. One must avoid contemporaory formulations for lightening and brightening skin which can potentialy harm skin rather than repairing, restoration and protection." Additionaly when considering skincare, it is advisable to avoid fragrance, sulphates, and parabens, she notes.
Complexity of teenage skin
During puberty, teenagers undergo hormonal changes that affect their skin. According to Dr. Varghese, the skin is dynamic and can change over time due to factors like nutrition, workplace conditions, and environmental elements. Hormonal fluctuations can result in increased oil production, making teens susceptible to issues such as acne and heightened sensitivity. These factors contribute to the need for an informed approach to skincare.
Avoid overdoing
While skincare can be beneficial, there is a risk of overdoing it. Excessive use of certain products or harsh ingredients may strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Moreover, aggressive scrubbing or picking at blemishes can exacerbate skin issues. Educating teenagers about the importance of moderation and gentleness in their skincare routines is paramount.
