Independence Day 2023: 76th or 77th anniversary? Know here
India attained freedom on August 15, 1947, putting an end to nearly 200 years of British colonial rule. With August 15 approaching, India is gearing up to honor its Independence Day. But before the patriotic vibes and celebrations kick in, there is a little math puzzle to solve. Which Independence Day is this exactly? 76th or 77th? Let's find out.
Is it the 76th or 77th anniversary?
India celebrated its first Independence Day on August 15, 1948. If we follow this idea, this year will be the 76th anniversary of being independent. However, if we begin counting August 15, 1947, as the start of India's freedom and consider that the country has completed 76 years of being free, it becomes the 77th anniversary. The bottom line is both arguments are valid.
Theme of year 2023
In 2023, Independence Day will be marked with the special slogan "Nation First, Always First." This slogan is part of a bigger celebration called "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav." The government has undertaken the initiative to organize a wide array of programs and activities throughout the year. These initiatives are aimed at recognizing and honoring the rich tapestry of cultures that exist within our country.
'Har Ghar Tiranga' 2.0
As part of these special celebrations, the Central government has also launched the second edition of the "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign. This campaign seeks to inspire individuals to proudly display the tricolour in their homes, offices, and workplaces. The government has also introduced the sale of the national flag through post offices, making it more accessible for citizens to obtain it.
'Meri Mati Mera Desh' campaign
Leading up to Independence Day, the "Meri Mati Mera Desh" campaign, conceptualized by PM Modi, will pay tribute to martyrs across the nation. Launched on August 9, the campaign will culminate on Independence Day. The campaign includes an "Amrit Kalash Yatra," where soil and saplings from 7,500 martyrs' villages will be brought to Delhi and planted at Amrit Vatika near the National War Memorial.
