International Day of Happiness: Being happy is a choice
The UN General Assembly recognized happiness as a "fundamental human goal" in the year 2011. The Assembly called for "a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples." In 2012, when the first-ever UN Conference on Happiness happened, the Assembly decided the International Day of Happiness to be observed every year on March 20.
2022 theme: Build Back Happier
Owing to the pandemic, this year's theme was decided to be Build Back Happier. If you ask the person next to you how they are doing they'd casually say they're doing good. But if you ask them if they are happy, they would get baffled. Unfortunately, as we age, we give in to various situations in life which eventually drains out our joy.
Are you happy?
Well, you cannot forcefully claim to be happy. Happiness might have a different definition for different people, but in all actuality happiness is a state of mind. Someone with all possible privileges might not be happy, while another person with very little might be living a life of bliss and contentment. Celebrate little joys in life instead of waiting for a big event.
Is success related to happiness?
We spend so much time hoping, waiting, and working hard to achieve something, that by the time we succeed, we're exhausted and realize all the fun and joy is gone. Success might bring you pleasure, but the real priceless joy in life lies in small inexpensive things, like holding your toddler's hands, a hug from a loved one, seeing your parents smile, etc.
Do not feel pressured to be happy
You cannot persuade yourself to feel a certain way; that would be deceptive. Just because you see someone appear happy on a mountain trek, does not necessarily mean that you would enjoy the same. When you feel upset, vent out, cry your eyes out, let it all loose and get over with it. Suppressing sentiments can result in emotional distress and poor mental health.
Limit usage of social media
FOMO, or the fear of missing out, has been affecting our happiness immensely, thanks to social media. We feel depressed when we compare our lives with the people we see on these platforms. Understand that a lot of hard work goes into making those ecstatic videos look the way they do and for the sole reason of capturing your attention.
