Happy birthday, Tobey Maguire! Here's how he trained for 'Spider-Man'
What's the story
Tobey Maguire, best known for his role in and as Spider-Man, is among the most talented actors in Hollywood.
And with the kind of physical transformation he underwent to play a heartthrob superhero, it won't be an exaggeration to state that he's super dedicated and disciplined when it comes to fitness.
On his 48th birthday, let's find out how he buffed up for it.
Training
Maguire worked out five-six days a week
According to reports, Maguire's overwhelming shooting schedule also included five to six days of intense training and workout every week to look sculpted for his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
He did a combination of exercises that had three sets each with about 12 repetitions.
From chest, shoulders, and biceps to triceps, back, legs, and calves, he left no inch of his body untoned.
Exercises
Exercises he did to tone his chest, back, and biceps/triceps
The actor's week used to start with a focus on toning his chest and triceps, for which he did a barbell bench press, incline dumbbell press, pec dec fly, lying triceps extension, and close-grip bench press.
The next day he would do back and biceps exercises like seated cable row, hyperextensions, one-arm dumbbell row, bent-over barbell row, barbell bicep curl, and bicep preacher curl.
More exercises
Exercises he did to tone his legs, shoulders, and abs
For legs and calves, Maguire did hack squats, leg extensions, and hamstring curls.
He shaped his shoulders with reverse pec-dec fly, seated dumbbell military press, and dumbbell lateral raise.
To look 'abs-olutely' chiseled, he did some abs exercises including crunches, hanging leg raises, and side bends holding dumbbells.
Per reports, he was consistent with the workout routine and sometimes even trained twice a day.
Fitness
The actor also did cardio, here's a step-by-step guide
Apart from other exercises, Maguire also focused on cardio.
He used to start with 20 minutes on the treadmill and then indulge in exercises like accordion crunches, side bridges, and supermans.
Once done, he used to get back on the treadmill for two minutes to raise his heartbeat again.
He repeated this entire circuit for a total of four rounds.
Challenge
Maguire's vegetarianism became a hurdle
Maguire trained with fitness trainer Duffy Gaver and had only six months to transform himself physically for the role.
During an interview, Gaver revealed that the actor's vegetarianism was a challenge to overcome.
As nutritional alternatives, "It was a lot of supplemental proteins, protein shakes," shared Gaver.
He consulted a company called NutriFit, which went out of its way to get Maguire's nutrition sorted.
Diet
He consumed a low-fat, high-protein diet
To get the desired body, Maguire was put on a diet that was low in fat but high in plant-based proteins.
Additionally, he steered clear of junk and processed foods or anything else that didn't help him achieve his fitness goals.
He ate every few hours and drank plenty of water throughout the day to keep himself hydrated.
