How to extend the life of your sneakers
Today, sneakers are more than just footwear; they are a style statement too. To keep your favorite kicks looking fresh and feeling comfortable, it is essential to adopt a routine that goes beyond the occasional wipe-down. Here are a few ways by which you can take proper care of your sneakers so that it can remain clean and fresh as well as last long.
Keep it away from moisture
Keep your shoes dry and free from moisture. Moisture encourages the growth of germs, which makes the material of your shoes more prone to breaking down when you wear them. Use desiccants such as silica pouches/gels to keep the shoes and soles dry and bacterial-free. If you don't have silica, you can stuff your shoes with newspapers and replace them after a week.
Store it in a cool place
Store your shoes out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry location when not in use. Direct exposure to sunlight or other sources of heat, such as hair dryers, can stiffen up the fabric, resulting in shrinking, crumbling and distortion of the shoes. Use shoe trees or stuffed tissue paper to help them maintain their shapes. Additionally, do not stack on over others.
Rotation is key
Avoid wearing the same pair of sneakers every day. Rotate between multiple pairs to allow each one to breathe and recover from the stress of daily use. This simple practice can significantly extend their lifespan. Different sneakers serve different purposes. While some are designed for running, others are more suitable for casual wear. Respect your sneakers' intended use, and they'll reward you with longevity.
Dust it often
Excessive dust accumulation can lead to discoloration and premature aging of your shoes. You can ensure the longevity of your shoes by regularly polishing and cleaning them to maintain their fresh appearance. To prevent dust buildup on the shoes, store them safely and away from frequently worn home slippers. The shoe closet is the ideal location to store your shoes.
Avoid harsh chemicals
Although certain fabrics can be machine-washed, as a general rule it is better to clean your sneakers with your hands using a moist cloth, a toothbrush, and a cleaner designed especially for sneakers. Use mild soap and water if you don't have a cleaner, but avoid harsh chemicals or detergents. Soak your laces separately in a solution of water and sneaker cleanser or detergent.
Protect the sole
Your lovely sneakers might become a factory of odors due to heat and perspiration. Wearing moisture-wicking socks and allowing your sneakers to air dry in between wears will help you fight the odor, especially if you work out in them. Quality socks act as a barrier between your feet and your sneakers, preventing excess moisture and minimizing odor.
