Eye care tips: How to maintain good eyesight
Our eyes are a very crucial set of organs that we just can't do without. Never take them for granted, and seek medical help when you face any difficulty with your vision. Research suggests that eating a balanced diet, and getting plenty of exercise are good for your eyes. Follow these simple and practical methods daily to keep your eyes healthy.
Get enough sleep
Give your eyes some rest, as they're constantly active as long as you're awake. Even when you're just chilling your eyes are doing their job. Inadequate sleep can lead to eye fatigue. Symptoms include irritation, difficulty in focusing, dryness or excessive tears, blurry vision, light sensitivity, or pain in the neck and shoulders. Adults need 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
UV protective sunglasses
Use UV protective sunglasses whenever you step out in the sun. Make sure there's assurance that the lenses of your sunglasses block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Do not stare directly at the sun even with your UV sunglasses on. Kids also need equal protection from the sun. So cover them with hats and make them wear the right sunglasses.
Maintain a healthy distance from your monitor
Monitors and screens should be positioned at about an arm's length away from your eyes and should be 20 degrees below eye level. Ensure there is sufficient diffused lighting in your room while you are working on your system. Focused lights or very bright lights tend to put stress on your eyes. Try not to strain your eyes in any way while working.
The 20-20-20 rule
If you want your eyes to stay healthy, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away from your computer and fix your gaze at anything that is 20 feet away. Blink 20 successive times to prevent dryness. Every 20 minutes, get up and walk 20 steps. Getting away from the screen gives rest to your eyes and also improves your posture.
Get your eyes checked regularly
To protect your vision and see your best, it's important to get regular check-ups; you never know what may come up. If you wear glasses, this is highly important to keep your power up to date. Get your eyes examined from time to time, just to rule out any diseases. If a disease is diagnosed early on, you can get started with treatment.
