How to take a proper social media break
Selena Gomez recently took a hiatus from social media. However, guess what? Her "I'm off social (media) for a while. I'm focusing on what really matters" didn't even last a day! Most people today usually deactivate their socials, only to crawl back into the world of mindless scrolling a few hours later. If you're among them, here's how to properly disconnect from social media.
Understand the purpose and be confident about it
Identify the reason behind your need for a social media detox. This could be overcoming stress, time management issues, addiction, or anything that's bothering you. After you have acknowledged the purpose, taking a break will keep you occupied with more tasks that will assist you in conquering the problem. This will prevent thoughts and temptations to go back to social media.
Don't be unrealistic with your approach
This is exactly where most people go wrong. Rather than starting with a month-long total disconnect from social media, start with a few hours or one day off each week. Refrain from announcing anything online as you may be tempted to see who responded and reacted. Only inform people who matter. Also try setting aside particular time slots for social media to practice self-control.
Think of various activities you can do offline
This may sound kiddish but having a time table, a to-do list, or simply writing down the activities you want to pursue during your offline period can yield positive results. It's often the void time that lures one to indulge in pointless scrolling, so make sure you have a plan. For suggestions, you can include meditation, reading, journaling, and exercising to your daily routine.
Limit your phone use and stop taking it everywhere
Let's face it; most of us carry our phones to the washroom and even indulge in a spiral of endless scrolling when hitting the sack at night. Replace it by carrying a book or a magazine instead (or better nothing!). This will help limit your phone's use, keeping you away from the urges of checking your social media when on a break.
Pause or turn off your notifications
An excellent way to start your social media break is by first living your life without notifications. This will be effective for those who instantly pick up their phones with every buzz or chime. During your break, temporarily uninstalling your social media apps can also contribute massively to your commitment. Seek help from your family or friends for this to work.
