Here's how you can set up a garden at home
If you want to have fresh veggies from your own garden for dinner everyday and don't mind dirtying up your hands a bit - setting up a home garden could just be the thing for you. All it takes is some supplies, your time, and some money. So, if you are ready for the commitment, here's how you can start a garden.
Decide the type of garden
First of all, you will have to put a finger on the kind of garden that you want to start - vegetable garden, herb garden, or flower garden. If you wish to feed your kids fresh vegetables that you have yourself worked on, go for a vegetable garden. If the purpose is to beautify your yard, a flower garden should be the right choice.
Step 2: Decide which plants to include
Not all plants grow well in all regions. Depending on the weather conditions and the quality of your soil, research about the plants that would grow nicely at your place, or seek help from experts or local vendors, before taking the final decision.
Choose a location for your garden
This is perhaps one of the most crucial aspects of planning your home garden. So, take a good look around your yard and decide where your garden should be placed. Since most vegetables require a good amount of sunlight, your vegetable garden should be at a place that isn't shaded by trees or fencing. Also ensure that the chosen area has rich, well-drained soil.
Get gardening supplies
The next step is to visit a garden store or a nursery and arrange all the required gardening supplies. But don't worry, they will not burn a hole in your pocket and will probably last for a number of years to come. You will need seeds/young plants, fertilizer, compost, mulch, a shovel and spade, soil-tilling equipment, a garden hose, and fencing material.
Finally, plant your seeds; maintain the garden
Once you have all the supplies, prepare the soil. Use a tiller to rake the soil and remove rocks, roots and other obstructions from your would-be garden. Finally, dig holes, plant your seeds and cover nicely with the soil. Also, fertilize your garden, if needed. And don't wait for the rain - water your garden regularly. You may also consider erecting a border fence.
