Conjunctivitis cases on the rise in Delhi-NCR: Top prevention tips
As heavy monsoon hits Delhi-NCR, the region faces a fresh concern - conjunctivitis, commonly known as "pink eye" or "eye flu." The rainy and humid weather creates a breeding ground for harmful germs, leading to the rise of this contagious eye infection. Check out these prevention tips recommended by doctors to protect your eyes and combat its spread.
Avoid rubbing your eyes
"In order to avoid spreading the disease and making the condition worse, it's essential not to contaminate your hands with germs," says Dr. KP Gupta, Ophthalmologist, Complete Eye Care Centre. "If you have conjunctivitis, avoid rubbing your eyes," emphasizes the doctor. "And by the way, not rubbing your eyes promotes eye health, even if you don't have conjunctivitis."
Maintain good hygiene
Practicing good hygiene is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of pink eye. Dr. Gupta advises, "Make sure not to use the same towel for both eyes if only one eye is affected. Also, frequently change pillowcases and other bedding. Do not go swimming in public areas. Only use clean towels to prevent further spread of the infection."
Wash your hands
It is best to avoid touching your eyes altogether, but it is likely that you might do it unconsciously. In such cases, Dr. Gupta advises, washing hands with antibacterial soap. In case you already have conjunctivitis, Dr. Gupta advises washing hands frequently. It is a good practice to wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
Wear black spectacles
Dr. Rohit Karna, MD Internal Medicine Lecturer, Birat Medical College, Nepal, recommends "wearing black spectacles" to keep your eyes safe. "Avoid sharing your spectacles," he adds. People with conjunctivitis use dark glasses mainly to shield their sensitive eyes from light, which becomes bothersome during the infection. These glasses also act as a shield, keeping out dust and other particles that could irritate your eyes.
Maintain lid hygiene
Dr. Karna emphasizes, "It's important to maintain lid hygiene." He suggests keeping your eyelids clean using cold and clean water. Simply take a clean cotton ball or soft cloth, dampen it with cold water, and gently wipe your eyelids from the inner corner to the outer corner. Be sure to use a fresh cotton ball or cloth for each eye to avoid cross-contamination.
