Expert-approved tips to grow a beard
Beard has transcended its identity as mere facial hair. It's a symbol of style, personality, and a testament to patience. Whether you're aiming for a full-fledged lumberjack look or a neatly trimmed goatee, the journey to growing a beard can be both challenging and rewarding. Dr. Navnit Haror, chief dermatologist, cosmetic and hair transplant surgeon and founder of Dr. Haror's Wellness shares some tips.
Genetics plays an important role
People often overlook genetics in beard growth. According to Dr. Haror, genetics play a crucial role in determining the thickness and pattern of your beard. "The genes you inherit from your parents largely dictate your potential for beard growth. If your father and grandfather had a full beard, the chances are that you can achieve the same," he says.
Personal grooming
For many men, growing a beard is regarded as a rite of passage. For some, it's not as simple as putting down the razor and waiting for nature to take its course. Dr. Haror emphasizes the importance of understanding one's hair growth patterns, "Although your genes play a dominant role in determining your beard's growth, there exist numerous approaches to amplify and enhance it."
Hormones and beard growth are related
Hormones, particularly testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), also play a significant role in beard growth, says the expert. "Such hormones stimulate the hair follicles in the facial area to produce a beard. If you have low levels of testosterone or if your hair follicles are less sensitive to these hormones, your beard may be thinner," he explains.
Take care of your beard
Dr. Haror highlights the importance of proper beard care, "Regular cleaning and conditioning are essential for keeping your beard healthy. Trimming is also necessary to maintain the shape and avoid split ends." Today there are many beard-focussed products available in the market. Using quality beard oil can nourish and soften your beard. Refer to these tips to tame your unruly beard.
Be patient
Remember that patience is the key to a successful beard-growing journey. "Give your beard time to grow and avoid trimming it too soon,"' advises Dr. Haror. It can take a few weeks to several months to develop a full-grown beard. If you face challenges growing a beard, consult a dermatologist. There are medical treatments available, such as minoxidil, that can help stimulate beard growth.
