A complete step-by-step guide to the Curly Girl Method
The Curly Girl Method is trending nowadays in beauty circles for all the good reasons. The latest haircare routine will give you healthier and more beautiful-looking curls and end your long-term battle with frizzy and dry hair. The method involves a natural hair care routine with mild hair care products and avoids using chemically-infused products that are full of parabens, silicones, and sulfates.
What is the Curly Girl Method?
Started by hairstylist Lorraine Massey in 2007, the method focuses on using certain hair products and techniques that will improve the appearance of your curls while avoiding those that might be harmful to them. It helps to accentuate your curls, coils, or natural waves by figuring out the best concoction of haircare ingredients for you. It boycotts the use of sulfate or silicone-infused products.
First, figure out your curly hair type
The first step is to figure out your curly hair pattern and characteristics including the hair porosity and elasticity. Your hair can be wavy, coily, or curly. Your hair elasticity is measured by how quickly a curl bounces back once you pull it out. You need to use protein-enriched hair products if it doesn't bounce back quickly. Low porosity hair requires moisturizing haircare products.
Start with a reset wash and then cleanse your hair
A reset cleanse or wash helps to remove any extra product stuck to your hair strands. First, use a sulfate-filled shampoo that will clean your hair and eliminate the wax and silicone from the strands. Then again wash your hair properly with a sulfate-free shampoo. Massage your scalp for at least 60 seconds to cleanse your curls well and then rinse off with water.
Apply a conditioner and gel
After shampooing your hair, take some silicone-free conditioner and run it through your curls until it gets fully saturated in your hair strands and feels slimy. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your hair and then rinse it off. Then apply a creamy hair gel from roots to tips in your damp hair and scrunch your hair to define the curls.
Dry with a cotton t-shirt
After your curls feel smooth and frizz-free, use the plop method to dry your hair. The plop method includes wrapping your hair using a cotton t-shirt to avoid frizz and then air-drying them. Scrunch the curls one more time. Follow this process every time you wash your hair. However, the reset step should be done only if you accidentally use a silicone-induced product.
