SPCA Hong Kong launches dating-style adoption app for pets
Would you like to see pets on a dating-style app? Well, Hong Kong has made it possible. Recently, Hong Kong launched its first-ever dating-style app for animal adoption called Adoption Date developed by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). According to SPCA community director Jenmon Jenkins, the app allows users to swipe right on animal profiles, potentially leading to real-life meetings and adoptions.
Boosting adoption rates
The goal of the app is to boost adoption rates and tackle the issue of animal abandonment in Hong Kong. It is a new and enchanting way for our animal companions to make home and friends in the digital age. Users can browse the profiles of dogs, cats, and other small animals, those in need of loving homes with a simple finger swipe, a big improvement for the city's pet adoption scene.
What to expect on the app
Adoption Date offers users a unique way to discover animals available for adoption at the SPCA, such as cats, dogs, and other small pets. Each animal's profile showcases their photo, name, age, breed, kennel location, and more. Jenkins emphasizes that animal abandonment is a significant problem in Hong Kong, with adoption rates remaining low after the pandemic due to travel and emigration, causing SPCA dog kennels to be filled to capacity.
Upcoming dog adoption event
To mark the app's debut, the SPCA is hosting a Dog Adoption Date event on February 24 at Petisan pet store in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island. Attendees will have the chance to meet rescue dogs from SPCA adoption centers. The Adoption Date app can be downloaded from the App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android, offering a fresh take on pet adoption inspired by popular human dating apps.
Similar apps
This is not the first time a Tinder-like app has been launched for pets. A few years ago, a bunch of animal lovers from Lithuania had launched a similar app called GetPet for those looking to adopt pets. Another similar app, PawsLikeMe, is based in Florida. These creative apps not only bring joy to pets but also foster a sense of community among their owners.
