Toenail fungus: Home remedies that actually work
Toenail fungus is a common health condition that can affect anyone, anytime in their life owing to a host of reasons like reactions from medications, hygiene, and contact with fungi. While they are difficult to treat and require medical attention, you can put some natural and home remedies to use that can offer you some respite until you book a doctor's appointment.
Baking soda
The reason why baking soda may actually work here is that it can absorb the moisture that can cause this fungus to spread and grow. All you have to do is, make a paste of baking soda with a little water. Apply it to the affected area and let it stay there for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
Garlic
Garlic is believed to have potent antimicrobial properties. It also has an antifungal agent called allicin that can prevent fungal growth when consumed or applied. Simply chop some garlic cloves and leave them on the affected toenails for about 30 minutes daily. It may cause a mild burning sensation at first but you will be fine in a few minutes.
Black tea
The reasons you should sip on black tea also include its soothing effects against toenail fungus. It contains tannic acid that closes pores on the foot from where the toenail fungus can spread and cause more infection. Boil some water with five-six black tea bags infused in them. Let it cool down to room temperature and once it does, soak your foot in it.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has antifungal properties and can be mixed with some water to make a solution to soak your foot in. The acid present in vinegar, known as acetic acid, also comes in handy to stop the spread of infection. If you can't stand its odor, you can also add some drops of essential oil. Try this remedy for 20 minutes daily.
Tea tree oil
Packed with antifungal and antiseptic properties, tea tree oil has showcased promising results in various studies on toenail fungus treatment, which is why it is an age-old remedy. In 1999, a study showed participants with toenail fungus consistently using a medicated cream that contained tea tree oil. Surprisingly, they did not have any fungal infections or relapses!
