Stuck in flooded areas? Here's what to note
Nature's unpredictable forces can sometimes lead to unforeseen situations, such as finding oneself in a flooded area while traveling. Distressing visuals from many touristry regions in Himachal Pradesh devastated by heavy rain are doing rounds on social media. Roads have been affected by floods and landslides compromising daily commutes. If you happen to be in one such area, keep the following tips in mind.
Stay informed
Stay updated with the latest information regarding the flood situation from the official channels of communication or from local residents. Keep track of the weather conditions and the level of water frequently. Monitor the unusual sounds near you to beware of a landslide or a flash flood. Listen to local authorities, follow their instructions, and seek guidance from the residents.
Prioritise personal safety
Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, as they can be deceptive and contain hidden dangers. Driving can possibly damage your vehicle and might lead to a breakdown at some moment leaving you stranded. If you must travel, avoid driving at night as there are high chances of missing potholes and drainages. Additionally, do not park your vehicles in flood-prone regions or near flooded areas.
Move to higher areas
Try your best to stay away from floodwater. Move to higher ground or designated safe areas and stay away from fast-flowing water, open drains, and unstable structures. If you are at a building, avoid taking refuge in a closed place because you run the risk of being trapped by floodwater. Climb to the roof and signal for assistance if you need to be rescued.
Be wary of your surroundings
It is always better to keep snackable items with you at all times. You never know when you might get trapped. In case you are in the water, be wary of the items that pass through the floodwater. Avoid touching things floating in the water. There could be downed power lines and electrocution is a severe risk associated with floods.
Inform your loved ones of your whereabouts
Make sure to let your family and friends know about your travel status and inform them of your safety. Regularly communicate with them, providing updates on your location and well-being. They could also possibly check and verify the news updates for you. If you are in trouble, try reaching out to them for help. They can coordinate and perhaps send help to you.
