Navratri 2023: Break open your fast with these healthy foods
We are only a few days away from celebrating the auspicious occasion of Navratri, when several people observe a fast to seek the blessings of the Goddess and purify their bodies and minds. However, they often indulge in foods loaded with oil and sugar to break the fast, which does more harm than good. Switch to these healthy foods instead to break your fast.
Sabudana khichdi
Sabudana is rich in carbohydrates, antioxidants, calcium, and iron. Although it is high in calories, it is low in fat and contains essential minerals too. You can prepare it with a host of ingredients like peanuts, tomatoes, and potatoes, which make it more nutritious. Stay away from sabudana fritters though. They are deep-fried and are full of oil, which can contribute to health issues.
Kuttu ka dosa
Kuttu ka dosa is the perfect alternative to those oil-rich kuttu ke pakode (kuttu fritters). The dosa made from kuttu (buckwheat) flour is crispy and light on the tummy, yet quite filling. Inside, you can even add a filling of potatoes or paneer to make it more delicious. Relish it with some homemade coconut or mint chutney.
Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are never out of fashion when it comes to fasting. You can savor a bowlful of your favorite fruits and veggies like bananas, oranges, apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, papayas, carrots, and spinach to break open your fast. Top it with lemon and some spices, and you are good to go. You can also add some dry fruits to it.
Makhane ki kheer
Makhane or foxnuts are packed with fiber, which keeps you full for a long time. They are also blessed with a good amount of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which makes them a go-to snack for many health freaks. Luckily, you can enjoy them during your Navratri fast as makhane ki kheer, which is a dish made of milk, nuts, makhane, and jaggery.
