Ayurveda's red flags: Harmful food combinations to avoid
In our pursuit of tantalizing our taste buds, we often concoct new dishes or blend diverse foods. However, not all combinations favor our digestive system. Certain commonly practiced food pairings can adversely alter food chemistry. Newsbytes connected with Mrs. Gita Ramesh, joint managing director of Kairali Ayurvedic Group, to explore food pairings considered harmful by Ayurveda for our bodies.
Honey with anything hot
Avoid combining honey with hot tea as it generates toxins in the digestive system, potentially leading to bloating, gas, or diarrhea. While occasional consumption is acceptable, refrain from making it a habit. Instead consume honey with lukewarm or cold tea. The efficacy of antioxidants reduces the side effects. Additionally, avoid cooking honey as heat may compromise its beneficial enzymes, vitamins, and minerals.
Cold fruit juices with hot tea, coffee, or milk
Many people have a habit of combining cold beverages like cold drinks, cold milk, or cold fruit juices with hot beverages like tea, coffee or hot milk, especially during breakfast. This creates an imbalance in the body causing indigestion and curdling in the stomach. The solution is to simply have a hot breakfast with nothing cold along with it, suggests Mrs. Ramesh.
Citrus fruits with hot or cold milk
The acidic nature of citrus fruits can curdle both warm or cold milk. This too is a known cause of indigestion, which is why you should avoid the combination. This forbidden pairing can also lead to acid reflux, heartburn, upset stomach and allergies, chest congestion and cold cough to name a few. Generally, it is a good idea to consume milk and fruits separately.
Fish and milk
If consumed separately, by themselves, both fish and milk are highly nutritious. Yet, when combined, their high protein content creates an imbalance, leading to potential issues like skin rashes and digestive discomfort. According to Ayurveda, this combination produces ama, or toxins, triggering various digestive problems with regular intake. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid this combination for better well-being.
