Hariyali Teej: History, significance, rituals, and celebrations
Hariyali Teej, a vibrant and joyous festival celebrated with fervor in various parts of India, marks the advent of the monsoon season and the abundance of greenery it brings. This auspicious occasion holds a special place in the hearts of married and unmarried women, as they get ready to celebrate and observe the fast on this holy day.
When is the Hariyali Teej?
Hariyali Teej, also known as Shravan Teej or Sawan Teej, falls on the third day of the Hindu month of Shravan (July-August). Hariyali, which means greenery, symbolizes the lush landscapes that the monsoon brings. This year, Hariyali Teej falls on August 19. The auspicious time will run from 8:01 pm on August 18 till 10:19 pm on August 19.
History: Celebrating the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
Hariyali Teej is a celebration honoring Goddess Parvati and her union with Lord Shiva. As per legends, it is the day when Lord Shiva accepted Goddess Parvati as his consort after the goddess spent 107 births in penance. It was during her 108th birthday that Devi Parvati could finally win him over. As a result, Goddess Parvati is also known as Teej Mata.
The festival holds great significance for women
In Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, married Hindu women commemorate Hariyali Teej by engaging in a day-long nirjala vrat (fasting without water) and praying for long and prosperous lives of their husbands. Hindu mythology holds that if a woman wears all 16 ornaments, she may protect her husband from all perils. This is even more special for the newlyweds.
Celebrations include applying henna, singing, and dancing
On the day of Hariyali Teej, the respective in-laws of married women offer them Shringar gifts including traditional clothing, bangles, henna, sindoor, and sweets. Additionally, women apply henna to their hands and feet on the day. The color of the mehendi indicates how much love a husband has for his wife. They also engage in joyful singing, dancing, and adorning swings beautifully with flowers.
