Inspired by Delhi, Gurugram plans 'Gurgaon Haat' near Dwarka Expressway
The Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) has unveiled plans to create a "Gurgaon Haat" near Dwarka Expressway in Sector 37C, taking inspiration from Delhi's famous Dilli Haat. This project aims to build a central gathering place for residents in the new sectors. A detailed plan has been prepared by HSVP officials and is currently pending approval from their headquarters. The proposed location is conveniently situated near Esplanade Mall and will offer direct access to both the Expressway and NH-8.
Addressing the lack of a dedicated marketplace
Many residential communities near the planned Gurgaon Haat site currently lack a dedicated marketplace like a "haat," leaving residents with limited shopping and leisure options beyond malls and restaurants. HSVP estate officer Vikas Dhanda envisions Gurgaon Haat as a platform to celebrate India's rich cultural diversity, reflecting Gurugram's global status. The project aims to provide an alternative destination for residents to explore and shop.
A blend of traditional and contemporary elements
Gurgaon Haat, like its Delhi counterpart, will embody the spirit of a traditional rural market while addressing modern needs. HSVP estate officer Dhanda told the Times of India, "There will be a synthesis of crafts, food, and cultural activities. In the middle of the haat, there will be a seating area and fountain for visitors." Through a blend of all these attributes, it will showcase the diversity of our culture, he added.
The proposed haat shall mix the rural with modernity
According to the proposed project, Gurgaon Haat will feature a rural, traditional ambience but with modern products on offer. This would provide local craftsmen a wide platform to market their goods and give Gurgaon's many attractions a hint of ethnicity and rurality.
Dilli Haat's success as an inspiration
Dilli Haat, which opened in March 1994, spans six acres and is home to numerous handicraft and handloom artisans. This Delhi tourism department project draws thousands of visitors daily, showcasing the vibrancy of Indian culture. Gurgaon Haat aspires to replicate this success by offering a platform for artisans and promoting cultural activities. Its strategic location and diverse offerings are expected to attract significant foot traffic from the new sectors and beyond.
