Gulmarg experiences dry spell this year; no snowfall recorded yet
Gulmarg, a well-known winter tourist spot in Kashmir popular for its ski slopes, is facing an unusual dry spell this year. For the first time in recent memory, Gulmarg and the nearby Pahalgam have had no snowfall in January, leaving winter enthusiasts around the world disappointed. The plains have seen no snow, and the hilly areas have experienced below-average snowfall, leading to a 79% rainfall deficit throughout December in the Kashmir Valley.

El Nino effect linked to dry spell in Kashmir
Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Kashmir Meteorological Centre, believes the dry spell is due to the El Nino effect. He told ANI that there are no major chances of precipitation in the upcoming days. "The weather may remain dry till noon of January 16. There was a pattern of early snowfall for the last three to four years, which is missing this year. There is no major spell. El Nino has persisted since November and may continue till next month."
Impact of El Nino on Kashmir's climate
El Nino, characterized by warmer surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, alters atmospheric circulation patterns. This shift results in diminished rainfall across Indonesia, India, and northern Australia, while intensifying rainfall and tropical cyclone formation in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Kashmir experiences El Nino's effects with prolonged dry periods, milder winters, and reduced snowfall. According to the meteorological department, this dry weather pattern is expected to persist into the following month.
Absence of western disturbances
The absence of western disturbances, which bring rain to the plains and snowfall in the higher elevations, has prevented significant snowfall this month, according to the India Meteorological Department. Western disturbances often start in October, with heavy snowfall and a harsh winter in the north during the final two months of the year. Currently, the snowfall is decreasing as these disruptions are weakening.
Dry spell's impact on tourism and economy
Gulmarg welcomed over 1.65 million visitors last year, marking its peak tourist footfall. However, this year's absence of snow has prompted tourists to cancel their trips to the town. Glaciologist and Himalayan researcher AN Dimri was quoted by PTI, "If it continues any longer, it can have a huge cascading effect on socio-economic activities. If you don't get (enough) snow, you don't get replenishment of water, it will impact agriculture, your health and can, in turn, impact your economy."
Winter sports enthusiasts disappointed by lack of snow
The absence of snow in Gulmarg is a huge letdown for winter sports enthusiasts who visit the area for skiing, snowboarding, and other activities. Additionally, Gulmarg is preparing to host the fourth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games from February 2 to 6. Featuring over 400 athletes representing various states, Union Territories, and the Army, the events will be held at Kongdoori and the main bowl of Gulmarg.
