Karnataka announces digital detox for responsible gaming
The Karnataka government has announced the launch of a Digital Detox initiative in collaboration with the All India Game Developers Forum (AIGDF), focusing on gaming and social media. The primary goal of this initiative is to raise awareness about the negative consequences of excessive digital consumption and promote responsible gaming and technology usage. Let us learn more.
Digitally empower state
Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj and Information Technology and Biotechnology, Priyank Kharge emphasized the government's commitment to building a digitally empowered Karnataka while addressing the issues of mental health, diminishing attention spans, and strained real-world relationships resulting from digital dependence. He acknowledged the pervasive influence of technology in people's lives and the norm of being glued to screens in today's hyper-connected age.
Mindful use of technology
The Digital Detox initiative aims to create an environment that encourages meaningful and constructive technology use while minimizing its adverse effects. The government plans to collaborate with the AIGDF and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) to promote awareness about mindful technology usage. The focus is on fostering a comprehensive understanding of online safety and promoting good digital citizenship practices.
Centers across the state
As part of the Digital Detox initiative, both online and offline Digital Detox Centres will be established across the state. These centers will provide personalized guidance, with trained professionals offering counseling and support to individuals seeking assistance in managing their relationship with technology. Last year, the Karnataka government partnered with Meta to implement measures focusing on online safety for students and educators.
Digital wellness
Practical tools and techniques will be employed to help individuals learn effective strategies for handling screen time, establishing boundaries, and cultivating mindful and healthy technology habits. Community connection will be fostered through workshops, group activities, and support groups to create a sense of belonging and shared experiences in the journey towards digital wellness and to curb excessive digital engagement.
What is digital detox?
A digital detox is a deliberate break from using electronic devices and online platforms to reduce screen time, alleviate stress, and foster mental well-being. During this period, individuals disconnect from digital engagement, opting for activities like outdoor pursuits, reading physical books, and face-to-face interactions. The goal is to establish a healthier balance between online and offline life, promoting mindfulness and reducing information overload.
