Google Doodle celebrates the opening of ICC Men's World Cup
Google released an animated doodle on Thursday to mark the start of the ICC World Cup 2023, which will get underway at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad at 2:00 p.m. The World Cup, which is organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) takes place every four years. The first match takes place today - between 2019's returning champions, England and runners-up, New Zealand.
What's the doodle about?
The Google Doodle shows two ducks running between the wickets while spectators watch in the background. On clicking the doodle, users will be redirected to the full schedule of the tournament. They can get a glimpse of the matches, match previews, the point table and about the players in one go. Ten teams are set to compete for the coveted trophy.
India looks to win for the third time
The World Cup is one of the most prestigious, watched, and well-liked one-day international (ODI) cricket matches in the world. This year, India is playing host to the 13th iteration of the quadrennial championship since it first began in 1975. India will be competing to lift the trophy for the third time. Previously, India won the tournament in the years 1983 and 2011.
Match schedule
For this edition of the tournament, about 45 matches will be played in the group stage, where each team will face all the other teams once. According to the standings on the point table, the top four teams will progress to the knockout stage. The knockout stage consists of two semi-final matches and one final match in Ahmedabad.
Who all are participating?
This year, teams from Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka will be participating in the tournament. Players from all these countries have already reached India and are gearing up for the matches. The tournament will be played all across India, at stadiums in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Kolkata, Dharamsala and Pune.
