What's the story

What is the best time to visit Greece? Although it may come off as a surprise, but the answer might be 'now' because the authorities of a certain island in Greece are offering to pay people €500 (Rs. 38,600 approximately) just to relocate there with their families. The move is intended to increase the island's tiny population. Here are more details.

Details

The island of Antikythera has a population of just 24

The island of Antikythera, located at a 45-minute flight from the Greek capital city of Athens, has a population of just 24, which swells slightly during the summer months. That is why the authorities have come up with the said scheme, in an attempt to combat its dwindling population. "We are looking for many families to revive our island," said the local council.

Facilities

There are provisional shops, electricity and internet, but no ATMs

Under the scheme sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Church, the officials are looking for young families with kids to relocate there. Common jobs at the island are fishing, building, and baking. There are provisional shops, and basic facilities such as electricity and internet connection, but no ATMs. Although Greek families are on priority, the opportunity is also open to people from other nationalities.
