Bread in India is a big joke, says influencer FoodPharmer
Revant Himatsingka aka FoodPharmer is a familiar name in social media for his statements and videos. Recently, Himatsingka, known for discussing various food brands, made headlines after raising concerns about the high sugar content in Bournvita, which resulted in a legal notice from Cadbury. Now, the social media influencer claims that having bread in India is a "big joke."
What did he say?
Himatsingka took to Twitter to voice his concerns regarding the state of bread in India. "Bread in India is a big joke! There are two types of bread in India. One which is openly unhealthy (white bread), and the second type (brown, multigrain, wholewheat) which pretend to be healthy when they are not!" read the tweet he shared on Saturday.

Maida tops the ingridient list
He demonstrates how maida (refined wheat flour), which is listed as the first ingredient in most brown bread in India, serves as the main component. Since ingredients are listed per weight, such bread cannot be regarded as healthy as maida provides very little nutritional value. "The maida is created by polishing the wheat which removes its layers of fiber," he says in the video.
Bread consumption has increased over the past few decades
The influencer added that the consumption of bread has increased significantly over the last few decades. "If you have 2 slices of bread a day, you have more than 700 slices in a year. Make sure you pick the right one!" he says. He further highlights the use of caramel color in brown bread to make it brown, instead of using whole wheat (atta).
Check for ingredients
Talking about multigrain bread he says, "Multigrain bread also does not mean it's healthy. It just means that it has more than one grain. Most multigrain bread in India is also mainly made up of maida." He urges people to check the ingredients listed and avoid bread varieties that have maida, palm oil, and preservatives. He also suggests people switch to rotis instead.
