Here's what happens on reciting Mahishasura Mardini stotram
As we are set to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja once again, let us acquaint you with the hymn to the goddess - Mahishasura Mardini. Composed by the revered sage Shri Adi Shankaracharya, this stotram holds immense significance in India's spiritual realm. Celebrity astrologer Parduman Suri underscores the history and its profound impact on individuals seeking strength, courage, and spiritual protection.
Celebrates Goddess Durga's victory over demon Mahishasura
Also known as the Ayi Giri Nandini stotram, this hymn celebrates Goddess Durga's triumph over the demon Mahishasura. It recounts his tyranny and Durga's victorious battle using her divine strength and weapons. The hymn extols her diverse qualities and forms, highlighting her as a protective and divine force. Devotees sing this hymn to seek her blessings and take refuge in her divine presence.
Origin of the 'stotram'
The stotram's intriguing origin is rooted in an incident from Adi Guru Shankaracharya's life. While on a journey, he encountered a grieving woman with her deceased husband in a narrow alley en route to Manikarnika Ghat. Moving the body presented a dilemma, and when approached by Shankaracharya, the woman questioned why such an act required human effort when the all-powerful creator was ultimately responsible.
Shankaracharya composed it in deep meditation
"This exchange led to a realization for Shankaracharya. He recognized the truth in the woman's words and entered deep meditation. In this state, he saw the primordial power, Mahamaya, lamenting everywhere," explained Suri. From this profound experience, the Mahishasura Mardini stotram spontaneously emerged as a hymn in praise of Goddess Durga, the slayer of the bovine asura Mahishasura.
Triumph of good over evil
Mahishasura, blessed by Lord Brahma, was invulnerable to gods and demons which allowed him to conquer heaven with his shape-shifting powers. To counter him, the gods created Maa Durga, resulting in a nine-day battle that culminated in Mahishasura's defeat. Witnessing his suffering, the Goddess' compassion led to the creation of the Sri Mahishasura Mardini stotram by the gods to distract her attention.
Benefits of reciting Mahishasura Mardini stotram
It's recited to seek blessings and protection from evil forces. According to Suri, reciting the Mahishasura Mardini stotram daily enhances inner strength and courage, acting as a safeguard from life's troubles and offering protection in the afterlife. "Worshiping Mother Jagadamba through this hymn not only bolsters courage but also provides solace during life's most arduous trials," he added.
