Expert shares how you can take care of newborn puppies
What's the story
For pet parents and their pets, probably nothing is more joyous than celebrating the arrival of newborn puppies into the world.
However, with that, comes a whole set of responsibilities too that have to be taken care of.
NewsBytes got in touch with Dr. Shantanu Kalambi, chief veterinary officer, Supertails, who shared tips on how you can nicely take care of these adorable pooches.
Tip 1
Offer a warm and safe environment
"Newborn puppies cannot regulate their body temperature, so it's crucial to keep them in a warm and draft-free area," shares Dr. Kalambi.
He suggests using a heating pad or a heat lamp (carefully monitored) to maintain a temperature between 85-90°F (29-32°C) for the first few weeks.
This will help you keep the tiny furballs warm and safe.
Tip 2
Nutrition and feeding
Newborn puppies are dependent on their mothers for milk. If the mother is around, ensure she is consuming a good diet. If not, consult a veterinary for guidance, recommends the doctor.
"They need to be fed typically every two-three hours as they have small stomachs and high metabolic rates. Use a bottle or a syringe with a specialized nipple designed for puppies," he adds.
Tip 3
Handling and socialization
Dr. Kalambi suggests avoiding excess handling, especially for the first few days. This allows them to bond with their mother.
"As the puppies grow, gradually introduce them to gentle human touch and sounds to help with their socialization. Allow supervised interactions with other well-vaccinated and healthy dogs to promote positive experiences," he enlightens.
While doing that, ensure the environment is conducive and safe.
Tip 4
Monitoring weight and other health conditions
"Regularly weigh the puppies to track their weight gain. A healthy puppy should gain weight daily. If you notice any weight loss or lack of weight gain, consult a veterinarian promptly," reveals Dr. Kalambi.
He also says that one should watch out for signs of distress such as excessive crying, difficulty breathing, or unusual lethargy, which could stem from an underlying health issue.
Tip 5
Elimination of waste and hygiene
"Mother dogs typically stimulate their puppies to urinate and defecate by licking their genital and anal areas," states the expert.
"If the mother is absent, you can gently mimic this action using a warm, damp cloth or cotton ball after each feeding to encourage elimination," he advises.
Use a fresh warm and damp cloth to clean the area after the process.
Tip 6
Regular veterinary check-ups
Handling newborn pups can be risky as they are more prone to diseases. Sometimes, even when they don't show any symptoms, they could be down with a medical issue.
"Schedule regular check-ups with a veterinarian to monitor the puppies' growth and development. The vet can guide on vaccinations, deworming, and other necessary healthcare measures," concludes Dr. Kalambi.
