Check out these expert-backed winter grooming tips for your pet
Our cuddly canines demand extra attention when the winter breeze gets chillier. With that, proper grooming becomes more important than ever since the harsh weather conditions may extensively damage their sensitive skin and fur. Dr. Shantanu Kalambi, chief veterinary officer, Supertails, shares with NewsBytes some essential winter grooming tips for pets that can keep them comfortable and healthy during this season of cold waves.
Brush away the winter blues
According to Dr. Kalambi, to keep your pet's coat healthy and well-insulated during the winter, brushing them frequently helps to eliminate dead hair, avoid matting, and encourage the creation of natural oil. "For long-haired pups, a slicker brush followed by a wide-tooth comb is the dream team. Short-haired friends benefit from a good rubber brush to whisk away loose fur and dander," he adds.
Bath time TLC
While frequent baths can strip away essential oils, a gentle sudsing every four to six weeks is essential for removing winter grime and salt residues. "Skip the harsh human formulas - they can harm your pet's delicate skin. Remember, thorough drying is key! Towel-dry your furry friend vigorously and consider a pet-safe hairdryer on the low setting for extra warmth," states Dr. Kalambi.
Paw protection
If you live in an area that receives snowfall, the icy sidewalks and harsh de-icing salts may cause damage to those cute paws. Dr. Kalambi suggests, "After every walk, gently wipe them with a damp cloth and apply a paw balm to protect and moisturize those precious pads. Regular trimming of overgrown nails prevents painful cracking and keeps your pet's gait comfortable."
Ear essentials
The expert believes that winter's dry air can irritate your pet's ears, making them prone to several infections with symptoms like swelling, discharge, odor, excessive scratching, redness, mites, etc. "Gently clean their ears with a vet-approved solution regularly, and avoid using cotton swabs that can push debris deeper. If you notice redness, discharge, or excessive scratching, consult your veterinarian promptly," he recommends.
Cozy comforts
Consider providing your pet with additional warmth as the weather turns colder. "A comfy sweater or coat for walks is a stylish and practical way to keep them toasty. Snuggle up with a plush bed or blanket indoors, and create a cozy haven for your furry friend to recharge after winter adventures," concludes the chief veterinary officer.
