Refine your sitar skills with these finger exercises
What's the story
The ability to execute accurate and expressive string bending on the sitar demands a high level of dexterity, strength, and flexibility in the fingers.
This article presents five powerful finger stretching exercises that will significantly enhance your agility and performance.
By integrating these exercises into your daily practice regimen, you can master the art of string bending and elevate your sitar playing to new heights.
Thumb stretch
Thumb opposition stretch
The thumb is essential for gripping the sitar neck and supporting bends.
To enhance its flexibility, practice the thumb opposition stretch.
Hold your arm out with your palm facing up. Use your other hand to gently push back on your thumb. Hold this position for five seconds before releasing.
Do this 10 times on each hand to increase thumb flexibility and strength.
Finger lifts
Finger lifts for dexterity
Finger lifts are easy and beneficial for developing finger independence.
Position your hand flat on a table with all fingers in contact with the surface.
Gradually raise one finger at a time as high as you can while maintaining the rest flat.
Hold each lift for three seconds before lowering it down and repeat this for each finger 10 times.
This exercise improves your ability to control individual finger movements.
Palm stretch
Palm stretch for flexibility
To bend those strings like a pro, you need flexible hands.
The palm stretch targets both your palm and fingers.
Reach one arm out in front of you with your palm facing down, then use your other hand to gently pull your fingers back toward your body until you feel a stretch in your palm and forearm.
Hold for 15 seconds, switch hands, and repeat three times for each hand.
Wrist stretches
Wrist flexor and extensor stretches
Extend one arm out in front of you, palm facing down, and gently pull back on your fingertips for 15 seconds to stretch your wrist flexors.
To stretch your extensors, simply reverse the position, pulling your fingertips towards you with your palm facing up.
Repeat this three times on each arm to strengthen your sitar string bending muscles.
Spider walks
Spider walks across strings
Spider walks enhance finger dexterity and strength on the sitar.
Begin at the top of the fretboard with one finger per fret. Progressively move each finger up one fret, imitating spider legs walking.
Ensure slow and controlled movements, applying constant pressure on the strings.
Do five rounds of spider walks up and down the fretboard daily. This will increase your accuracy and control during string bends.
