    What's the story

The palatoglossus muscle is a key player in swallowing and speaking.

By strengthening this muscle, you can enhance these functions, particularly if you've been dealing with weakness or dysfunction.

This article provides a simple guide to five effective exercises for strengthening the palatoglossus muscle, paving the way for improved oral motor function.

    Speech

    Tongue push-ups

Tongue push-ups are performed by pushing the tongue against the roof of the mouth as hard as possible, keeping it there for a few seconds, and then letting go.

This exercise not only strengthens the palatoglossus but also other muscles that contribute to speech and swallowing.

By doing 10 reps, three times daily, you can build up a lot of strength over time.

    Stretching

    Yawning stretch technique

Intentionally yawning serves as an effective exercise to stretch and strengthen the palatoglossus muscle.

By consciously opening your mouth wide as if you're yawning, you will feel a stretch in this muscle and the surrounding area.

Hold this position for five to 10 seconds before releasing. This will provide a good stretch, and over time, with regular practice, you can improve the flexibility and strength of the muscle.

    Hydration exercise

    Gargling practice

Gargling with water is another effective way to strengthen your palatoglossus muscle. When you gargle, the back of your throat contracts, working out the very muscle you're trying to target.

To do this, gargle with water for 30 seconds, twice a day. It will keep your muscles strong and your mouth clean.

    Vocalization method

    Humming sounds

Humming is a surprisingly simple and effective exercise for your palatoglossus muscle.

By humming at different pitches and tones, you create vibrations that act like a mini workout for this area.

Try to hum for at least five minutes each day, and don't be afraid to play around with different sounds to target various parts of your throat and mouth muscles for a well-rounded exercise.

    Swallow technique

    Swallowing exercises

If you want to specifically strengthen your palatoglossus muscle, you should practice swallowing exercises.

Simply take a sip of water, hold it in your mouth, tilt your head back a bit, and then swallow hard.

Do this 10 times in a row, twice a day. Make sure you can feel the muscles at the back of your throat working with each swallow.
