Why eating in bed might be a health hazard
Indulging in a cozy meal while nestled in the comfort of your bed might seem like the epitome of relaxation. However, this seemingly idyllic setting comes with its own set of drawbacks that extend beyond the allure of comfort. Adopting this practice can affect your physical and mental health. Understanding the pitfalls of this habit sheds light on the importance of mindful eating environments.
Invites germs
The tiny crumbs or spills that are left behind are among the worst things about eating in bed. Besides the need to regularly wash your bedding and wipe spills off your mattress, you are also luring bugs into your bed to feast on crumbs. These bugs can lead to allergic reactions, respiratory problems such as asthma and skin problems including irritation and itching.
Poor digestion
People eat at tables and sit on chairs in order to encourage healthy posture and facilitate optimal meal absorption by our digestive systems. Eating on bed means bad posture including bending and curving the body, which puts stress on the body and makes it difficult for the stomach to hold food down. This can result in heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion.
Potential weight gain
When compared to eating on the table, you will be more distracted while eating on bed. And being comfortable on the bed leads you to overeat, where you don't listen to your body. This is because, you tend to forget the portion control when you are under your cozy blanket with a food in your hand and your favorite movie/show playing in front.
Sleep issues
Eating in bed will disrupt your sleep cycle and make it harder to unwind and fall asleep when you want to since it will associate the bed with activities other than sleeping. Furthermore, the sleeping environment may become unclean and even dangerous due to the presence of mold and germs. An unheigenic sleeping environment can lead to poor sleep routine, affecting your health overtime.
