Cream, lotion, ointment, balm, and gel: What's the difference
In the realm of skincare, you'll come across an array of products, ranging from creams, lotions, ointments, and balms, to gels. While most people may use these products interchangeably, they are different in terms of their purpose, composition, and texture. With that in mind, let us understand the major differences between these skincare essentials so that you make the right choices.
Consistency and texture
Creams are smooth and typically have a moderately thick consistency, falling between non-greasy and mildly greasy. They are thicker than lotions. Lotions have higher water content, so they're lighter and easier to spread. Ointments, thicker than creams and lotions, offer extensive skin coverage and tend to be greasy. Balms are similar to ointments but have a waxy consistency, while gels resemble a semi-solid form.
Oil content
Creams contain oil but out of all the products concerned, ointment contains the most oil. This is why ointments stay on the skin while the rest of them vanish when spread. Gels are oil-free, while lotions have oil but less than creams. And finally, balms, on the other hand, have high amounts of oil in them but still less than ointments.
Usage or purpose
Creams are used to hydrate and nourish the skin due to their combination of oil and water components. Containing healing oils, balms are intended for care and repair; while ointments incorporate medicinal ingredients for treating skin-related infections or wounds. Lotions are used to address specific issues like acne or dryness since they penetrate deeply. Gels are formulated as drug delivery systems for therapeutic effects.
Absorption rate
Creams get easily and quickly absorbed into the skin, which is why they are ideal for routine use. Lotions also get rapidly absorbed and are commonly used for general wear and tear on the skin. Ointments, on the other hand, stay on the skin instead of getting absorbed right away. Gels get absorbed quickly but do not provide moisture. Balms don't penetrate deep.
