Durga Puja beyond borders: Countries that celebrate the festival
Durga Puja, the vibrant and grand festival celebrating the victory of the Goddess Durga over evil, is an event cherished by millions. While it traditionally takes center stage in the Indian state of West Bengal, it has also found its way into the hearts of communities across the globe. Here's a glimpse into the countries where Durga Puja is celebrated grandly.
Nepal
Similar to India, Nepal celebrates the festival based on a similar schedule. Ten days are devoted to the celebration of Durga Puja, also known as "Dashain," in Nepal. Idols of the Goddess are installed in homes and temples, and devotees offer prayers and perform various rituals. These days, no buses, government offices, or schools function.
Bangladesh
As the home to the second-largest population of Hindu Bengalis, Bangladesh celebrates Durga Puja in a flamboyant manner. This significant cultural event is characterized by grand processions and the rhythmic beats of dhak. Devotees visit temples to seek blessings for peace and prosperity from the Goddess. In Dhaka, local temples position little girls as symbols of purity, representing Goddess Durga, whom the locals worship.
The United Kingdom
Approximately fifty percent of the Puja celebrations take place in London, where a select group of organizers imports Goddess Durga idols and conducts the puja in the traditional Bengali style. Furthermore, these associations host events designed to engage individuals of all age groups. Bengali artists are invited to perform at the Puja, with the extent of their participation determined by the committees' financial resources.
Australia
According to historical archives, Durga Puja was initiated by twelve families in New South Wales in 1974. Today, this festival is celebrated in all major cities. During the festival, adults present musical concerts that feature a blend of modern fusion music and classic Rabindra Sangeet, accompanied by performances by esteemed artists. Durga Puja in Australia is a communal event where everyone actively participates.
United States
Since so many Indians, especially Bengalis, reside in the United States, Durga Puja is widely observed and celebrated there. Originally hosted in the early 1970s, the five-day event is currently held in all 50 states of the US. The festival is organized by numerous groups around the country, and during that time, people get together to rejoice, mingle, and meet new people.
