Ayurvedic herbs that naturally balance cholesterol levels
The sedentary lifestyle we lead has had a deep impact on our overall health. While obesity is on the rise, it has led to an increase in diabetes and cholesterol among patients. Shrawan Daga, founder of Krishna's Herbal and Ayurveda suggests that Ayurveda can support heart health and eventually manage cholesterol. He suggests a bunch of Ayurvedic herbs that can help control cholesterol.
Guggul helps in lowering cholesterol
Guggul, which is derived from the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree, has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for millennia for its high cholesterol-lowering effects. Guggul is believed to enhance the liver's ability to metabolize cholesterol and triglycerides. "Even as it lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol, guggul also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities, which help maintain heart health," says Daga.
Arjuna helps in cardiovascular health
"Arjuna, or Terminalia arjuna, is a powerful plant for cardiovascular health," says Daga. According to him, it aids in the strengthening of heart muscles, the improvement of blood circulation, and the maintenance of appropriate cholesterol levels. Besides strengthening heart muscles, Arjuna also helps to lower triglyceride levels, which is another important element in heart health.
Triphala helps in purifying the body
Triphala, as the name suggests, is a versatile Ayurvedic formulation in India recognized for its purifying effects. It is made up of three fruits: amalaki (Indian gooseberry), bibhitaki (bahera), and haritaki (chebulic myrobalan). "Triphala assists digestion, boosts metabolism, and aids in the removal of toxins from the body, all of which can help manage cholesterol levels indirectly," Daga says.
Garlic, turmeric and tulsi
According to Daga, garlic, turmeric, and holy basil (tulsi) are all powerful antioxidants that protect the heart from oxidative stress. These commonly found herbs have stress-relieving properties. "You can also find cholesterol juice in the market that has the goodness of all these Ayurvedic herbs. Imbibe them in your life, and let your heart beat happily," he says.
